Someone, at some point, told you that tea doesn't count toward your daily water intake. Maybe they said it cancels itself out. Maybe they said you have to drink a glass of water for every cup.
It isn't true, and the research settling it is not new or controversial. Here is where the idea came from, what the studies actually found, and the one narrow situation where the myth has a grain of truth in it.
Where the myth started
The story traces back to a 1928 study with three participants. Researchers observed that when people who had abstained from caffeine for a period were given a large dose, their urine output increased. That finding was real. What happened next was that it got repeated, simplified, and stripped of its conditions until it became a piece of folk wisdom: caffeine is a diuretic, therefore tea dehydrates you.
Two things got lost in translation. First, the effect depended on the participants being caffeine-naive. Second, and this is the bigger omission, nobody accounted for the fact that tea is mostly water.
The arithmetic nobody does
A cup of black tea is roughly 99.5% water. If you drink a 240 ml cup, you have taken in about 238 ml of fluid.
For that cup to dehydrate you, it would have to cause you to lose more than 238 ml of fluid on top of what you would have lost anyway. Caffeine at the doses in a normal cup of tea does not come close to that. It is not a question of whether caffeine has any diuretic action, it does, mildly, but whether that action outweighs the fluid the drink delivers. It does not. The net effect is positive. You end up with more water in you than before.
What the research found
Tea versus water, head to head. A 2011 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition had men drink either about 1.5 litres of black tea or the same volume of water across a day, then measured hydration markers, blood, urine, and body water. There was no meaningful difference between the two groups. The researchers concluded that tea hydrates comparably to water.
Habitual consumers show no effect at all. A 2014 study in PLOS ONE compared four cups of coffee a day against the same volume of water in habitual coffee drinkers. Coffee carries roughly twice the caffeine of tea. Across every hydration measure taken, there was no difference. If coffee doesn't do it, tea certainly doesn't.
The threshold is higher than a teacup. Reviews of the caffeine literature put the point where a measurable diuretic effect appears at somewhere around 250–300 mg of caffeine consumed in a single sitting, and mainly in people who don't normally drink caffeine. A cup of black tea contains roughly 40–70 mg. You would need to drink five or six cups back to back to reach that threshold, at which point you have also just consumed well over a litre of fluid. The fluid wins.
Tolerance builds fast. Even that modest diuretic response fades with regular intake, typically within a few days. If tea is part of your routine, your body has already adapted.
There's also the Beverage Hydration Index, a 2016 study that ranked common drinks by how well they keep you hydrated over a few hours. Tea and coffee landed alongside plain water. Milk and oral rehydration solutions actually scored higher, because protein, fat, and electrolytes slow gastric emptying and fluid loss. Nothing tested came out worse than water in any way that mattered.
The grain of truth
There is a narrow case where the old finding holds:
If you never consume caffeine, and then drink a very large amount in one sitting, think five or six strong cups in quick succession, you may notice increased urination. That is a real, documented response. It is also temporary, self-limiting, and disappears once your body adapts. It is not dehydration in any clinically meaningful sense, and it is nothing like a normal day of drinking tea.
If you are exercising hard in heat, or you are ill and losing fluid, tea is still fluid and still counts. Sports and heat contexts call for electrolytes as well as water, but that is an argument for adding something, not for subtracting tea.
What to actually watch for
Tea's real caveats have nothing to do with hydration.
Iron absorption. Tannins in black tea bind non-heme iron, the kind from plants, and reduce how much you absorb. If you are iron-deficient, vegetarian, or pregnant, drink tea between meals rather than with them. An hour either side of eating is enough.
Caffeine timing. Caffeine has a half-life of around five hours. A late-afternoon cup is still working on you at bedtime. Black tea's caffeine tends to feel gentler than coffee's, partly because of L-theanine, an amino acid in tea leaves that smooths the edge, but it is still caffeine.
Total intake. Most health authorities put a comfortable ceiling around 400 mg of caffeine a day for adults, which is roughly six to eight cups of black tea. Lower if you're pregnant. That's a limit on caffeine, not on hydration.
The short version
- Tea is about 99.5% water and hydrates you roughly as well as water does.
- The diuretic effect of caffeine at teacup doses is far too small to offset the fluid you drink.

- The exception, a large dose in someone with no caffeine tolerance — is temporary and mild.

So the next time someone tells you your tea doesn't count, you can tell them exactly which 1928 study they're quoting.
